At Christmas, certain traditions remain unmissable: illuminated fir trees, Christmas markets, santon fairs and, of course, nativity scenes. In Allauch, near Marseille, lies a Provencal nugget: France’s largest animated nativity scene. A blend of tradition and authenticity, ittransports young and old into a world where the magic of Christmas meets Provencal craftsmanship. A not-to-be-missed outing to celebrate the festive season with the whole family.
France’s largest animated nativity scene

Some traditions are worth preserving, and Provence is the perfect example. A land of santonniers, it lights up every year as the festive season approaches. This time, all eyes are on Allauch. Marseille’s neighboring town is home to France’s largest animated nativity scene.
Conceived and brought to life by Gilbert Orsini, this Provencal crib has become a veritable tourist attraction over the years. Since its creation in 1978, it has already attracted over a million visitors. And this 48th edition will be no exception. Visitors to the “Vieux-Bassin” gallery in Allauch will marvel at the staging of over 800 clay santons, some 50 of which are animated. A meticulous show that brings the Nativity and the Christmas spirit to life.
A showcase for Provencal craftsmanship

As well as being the largest animated crib in France, the Allauch crib is also one of the most beautiful in Provence. Each santon is carefully crafted before being meticulously dressed in antique fabrics. Here, there’s no question of santons bearing the effigy of Bernard Tapie or Professor Raoult. True to tradition, the santons represent the trades of artisans such as potters, bakers, shoemakers, spinners and carpenters. To complete the picture, the backdrops feature emblematic regional monuments and villages such as Gordes, Avignon and, of course, Allauch.
This year, new characters join the show: the tians merchant from Saint-Zacharie, the newspaper merchant, the coal potter and the animated saddler.
More than just a nativity scene, this is a true tribute to the trades of yesteryear, Provencal traditions and the magic of Christmas.
