Usually closed to the public, its remarkable garden opens its doors exceptionally during the summer. It’s an opportunity to discover a little-known piece of heritage, featuring rocaille architecture, lush vegetation, and a spectacular view of the Mediterranean.
A historic garden suspended between the sea and cultural heritage
Overlooking the Corniche Kennedy, above the Anse du Prophète, Villa Santa Lucia keeps a low profile. Behind its walls, however, lies a vast estate designated as a historic monument, where nature and architecture have been in harmony for over a century.
Originally, the land resembled a Mediterranean countryside covered with pine and holm oak trees. An initial transformation in the 1890s turned it into a spectacular setting. Grottoes, waterfalls, staircases, galleries, and lookouts were built according to the vision of the Marseille-based rock garden designer Gaspard Gardini. The garden continued to evolve, notably with the introduction of new plant collections by Jean-Léopold Renard. Today, his family preserves this exceptional heritage.
A stroll among rock gardens, rare plants, and sea views
A visit to the gardens of Villa Santa Lucia is full of surprises. Each terrace reveals a new world, with the Mediterranean as a backdrop. The path alternates between shaded walkways, scenic viewpoints, and rock gardens, creating a stroll that is as peaceful as it is exotic.
The site’s microclimate fosters the growth of a rich botanical collection. More than 200 Mediterranean, subtropical, and exotic species thrive in the garden. Visitors will encounter century-old pines, palm trees, bamboo, and citrus trees grown in large Anduze clay pots. They’ll also find rose bushes, jasmine, succulents, and many rare plant species.

This summer, the public will be able to explore the remarkable gardens of Villa Santa Lucia from July 1 to September 7, 2026. The gardens will be open on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and holidays, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Guided tours are also available year-round for groups by reservation. Villa Santa Lucia typically participates in the “Rendez-vous aux jardins” event in June and the European Heritage Days in September. These are opportunities not to be missed for visiting this unique site.
