In Marseille, we think we know all the rooftops! The ones overlooking the sea, the ones overlooking the Old Port, the ones where you have to elbow your way in starting at 7 p.m. This one is nothing like that. It’s located on the roof of the Museum of Contemporary Art in the 8th arrondissement, and it offers a much more laid-back atmosphere.
A rooftop bar that doesn’t rely on the sea
Le Kiosk occupies a 341 m² rooftop terrace atop the MAC, Marseille’s Museum of Contemporary Art. No panoramic view of the Mediterranean here! The view overlooks Bonneveine Park and the museum’s courtyard. What sets it apart are the plane trees growing right on the terrace, providing shade for the tables… A rare luxury in Marseille in the height of summer, and an atmosphere that feels more like a village square than a cocktail bar. There’s seating for about eighty people, and dogs are welcome.
Specialty coffee, fresh snacks, and late-night hours on weekends
As for the menu, the spot defines itself as a hybrid. Specialty coffee on one side, fresh snacks on the other. Salads, sandwiches, and barista specialties, with prices starting around €20. The hours are worth noting: open Tuesday through Sunday starting at 9 a.m., closing at 6 p.m. during the week and on weekends, but staying open until 10 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays. That’s where the place takes on a whole new dimension—a pre-dinner drink under the trees, on a museum rooftop, is an experience you won’t find anywhere else in the city. Le Kiosk also hosts regular events tailored to the southern neighborhoods.
And while you’re there, step inside the museum
You might as well take the opportunity to head down one floor. The MAC, located at 69 Avenue d’Haïfa in the 8th arrondissement, houses one of the region’s finest collections of contemporary art and hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The combination of an exhibition in the morning followed by lunch under the plane trees makes for a particularly enjoyable Sunday outing. And it’s definitely less crowded than yet another brunch at the Vieux-Port.
