This Friday, May 1, kicks off the list of welcome long weekends in May. As required by the Labor Code, Labor Day is a public holiday throughout most of France. Marseille is no exception, so the city will be operating at a slower pace this Friday. However, some businesses and public transportation will remain open. Here’s a rundown of what will be open and closed in Marseille for those planning to enjoy the city.
Shops and businesses

As for major shopping centers, you can skip them. All shopping malls and hypermarkets under the Leclerc, Carrefour, Grand Frais, Auchan, and Intermarché brands will be closed this Friday, May 1.
For last-minute needs, you’ll have to turn to neighborhood stores such as Carrefour Express or Casino Shop. Some may be open on this holiday.
Culture and leisure

If you feel like exploring the city, keep in mind that most attractions will be closed. This includes all municipal museums, the Mucem, the Musée Regards de Provence, and the Château d’If. You also won’t be able to visitthe Orange Vélodrome.
But since Marseille never truly sleeps, some places will welcome visitors this Friday, May 1. Among them:
- The fabulous Cosquer Cave
- The iconic Notre-Dame de la Garde
- The Surprising Museum of Illusions
- The skate park and ice rink at the Palais Omnisport
Transportation

As for transportation, the RTM network has announceda complete shutdown of the metro, tram, bus, and ferry on May 1. You’ll therefore need to rely on walking, biking, or scooters.
Other forms of transportation will still be running, however:
- The shuttle connecting Marseille Provence Airport to Saint-Charles Station
- The little tourist trains
- The Colorbüs
- Ferry services to Pointe Rouge and L’Estaque (ferry)
- The shuttle to Frioul (the boat)
In any case, we wish you a restful and relaxing Labor Day.
