Pont du Gard: Roman marvel within easy reach of Marseille
Just two hours from Marseille, the Pont du Gard is one of the most fascinating remains of antiquity. The highest bridge-aqueduct in the Roman world, this 20-century-old masterpiece overlooks the Gardon between Uzès and Remoulins, and continues to amaze visitors with its history and ingenuity.
A feat of ancient engineering
Built to carry water from Uzès to Nîmes, the Pont du Gard was part of a 50 km aqueduct. Its architecture is based on remarkable precision: an average slope of 25 cm per kilometer allowed 40,000 m³ of water to reach Nîmes every day. The perfectly cut stones fit together without mortar, and each arch is angled inwards for optimum strength. Nearly 1,000 workers built this 50,000 -ton giant in just 5 years, keeping the city supplied for 5 centuries.
