From a medieval fortress to an artistic retreat: the rebirth of the Château de La Napoule
Occupied since ancient times by the Romans, the site of the Château de La Napoule was home to an imposing fortress in the 14th century. Destroyed and rebuilt many times, then converted into a glassworks in the 19th century, the building had become nothing more than a sleepy seaside villa when Henry and Marie Clews discovered it in 1918. Struck by the panoramic view of the Mediterranean and the charm of the old stones, the American artist couple decided to make it their creative haven.

What was supposed to be a simple renovation turned into a colossal project spanning seventeen years. Giving free rein to their imagination, Marie took on the role of architect and landscape designer: she erected high ramparts, built a guardhouse, and constructed two new towers—the Saracen Tower and the Romanesque Tower. Henry devoted his days to sculpture, adorning each column with mythical and fantastical creatures. By blending neo-medieval lines with a fairy-tale imagination, the duo has crafted a truly unique historic monument on the French Riviera.
An enchanting tour through secret gardens and artists’ studios
Stepping through the gates of Château de La Napoule is like treating yourself to a bucolic and cultural escape from time. Designated as “Remarkable Gardens,” the outdoor spaces offer a magical stroll: a central path lined with ponds, terraces overlooking the Bay of Cannes, a secret garden, and century-old cedars. Along the paths, the lush greenery blends harmoniously with the fountains and sculptures. A free, self-guided treasure hunt also allows younger visitors to uncover the park’s mysteries.
