Which castles capture the French imagination the most? According to a recent study conducted by Chateaupedia based on Google searches, these historic buildings account for more than 5.5 million monthly search queries in France. While the top of the rankings is largely dominated by the giants of Île-de-France and the jewels of the Loire Valley, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region is no slouch. From the magnificent Palais des Papes to the hidden gems of Provence just a stone’s throw from Marseille, discover the country’s most sought-after monuments and the architectural treasures waiting to be explored near Marseille.
Castles of France: When the Giants and Flagship Departments Steal the Spotlight
With more than 5.5 million searches entered on Google each month, enthusiasm for French castles is reaching new heights. According to a study published by Chateaupedia, internet users’ curiosity is overwhelmingly focused on a handful of exceptional gems: the top ten monuments in the ranking alone account for 17% of national search volume. Unsurprisingly, the Palace of Versailles tops this list, ahead of the majestic Château de Chenonceau and the elegant Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte.

Geographically speaking, France’s heritage reveals a very marked polarization. The Île-de-France region dominates the country, accounting for 18% of total demand, driven by the exceptional appeal of the Yvelines department. It is closely followed by the Centre-Val de Loire region, where the famous Loire Valley castles account for 16% of searches, even though they represent only 8% of the listed buildings. Finally, among the most popular departments, Indre-et-Loire and Dordogne top the list of searches by history enthusiasts.
From the Pharo to the Palais des Papes: Our Region’s Iconic Landmarks
While the colossal castles of the North and the Loire Valley attract the most attention, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region also stands out with its superb architectural gems. Leading the way in Provence, the unmissable Palais des Papes in Avignon ranks 7th among France’s most sought-after monuments, making Vaucluse one of the region’s flagship departments. But heritage lovers in Marseille don’t have to travel far to admire exceptional buildings.

Right in the heart of Marseille, the magnificent Palais du Pharo (ranked 24th nationally) is the pride of the Bouches-du-Rhône department with its breathtaking view of the Old Port. Venture a little further afield, and other sites catch your eye: the sumptuous Château de Lourmarin nestled in the Luberon, the famous Palais Nikaïa in Nice, or the romantic Château de la Napoule overlooking the Bay of Cannes. So many ideas for cultural getaways to explore to your heart’s content, all starting from Marseille!
