While Provence is a privileged destination for family getaways, it is not always necessary to travel miles to enjoy a complete change of scenery. Less than 30 minutes from Marseille lies a hidden gem of unspoiled nature with striking contrasts. A babbling river, gushing waterfalls, and striking red rocks punctuate this walk of wonder. Immerse yourself in the wake of La Cadière to the source of the Infernet, which reveals the little-known treasures of the Vitrolles Plateau.
A getaway in the heart of nature less than 30 minutes from Marseille

Starting from the Chemin des Pinchinades, on the border between Vitrolles and Les Pennes-Mirabeau, the trail invites you to follow the course of the Cadière. After just a few meters, the hustle and bustle of the city fades away, giving way to dense undergrowth. The murmur of water, lush ferns, and holm oaks accompany walkers until the earth changes color. Gradually, the ground takes on a fiery red hue, signaling the entrance to an almost unreal setting.
A taste of Colorado in the heart of Vitrolles
Then the horizon clears and opens up to a spectacular panorama. All around, you can see clay cliffs the color of a sunset, crowned by fragrant garrigue. The Vitrolles Plateau, with its red and ochre rocks, takes on the air of Colorado and transports visitors to a spectacular otherworldly place. Continuing the exploration, the path leads to a first waterfall that sculpts the rock. This before guiding us to the highlight of the walk: the source of the Infernet. Gushing forth in the middle of the vegetation, it gives the impression of a veritable oasis. Although swimming is prohibited in order to preserve the ecosystem, the serenity that emanates from the place invites you to take a contemplative break out of time.
A walk accessible to the whole family
Because “a change of scenery” does not necessarily have to mean “difficult to access,” this walk is suitable for the whole family. Its landscaped banks and gentle slope make it an easy hike, even for children. They will be the first to be charmed by the landscape and the red earth beneath their feet. The site also welcomes our four-legged friends. For a distance of 4 km round trip, allow between 1.5 and 2 hours for the walk.
The starting point is marked by a large metal gate bearing the inscription “Chemin de l’Infernet.” Visitors can park on site, but be aware that the parking lot fills up quickly during high season.
