Through 64 films, the Rencontres Cinématographiques invites us to reflect, intimately and collectively, on women’s struggles, their hopes and the sacrifices they sometimes have to make to be free. And that’s not all: you’ll travel to 40 countries and discover stories from elsewhere, poignant accounts and unprecedented perspectives. A true cinematic world tour!
Among the nuggets not to be missed: there’s a general crush on the renaissance of independent Indian cinema, which promises to unveil films as strong as they are fascinating. And for fans of short films, don’t miss the screening of works by 8 young directors! As you can see, the 2025 edition promises to be a true celebration of cinematic diversity and innovation.
A program rich in diversity and encounters
To celebrate its 35th anniversary, the festival is inviting an emblematic figure of committed cinema: Costa-Gavras, renowned filmmaker and author of political films that have marked generations. The director, who is also president of the Cinémathèque française, will be the guest of honor, and will present his new film Le Dernier Souffle, a work that questions individual freedom. He will be joined by producer Michèle Ray-Gavras and actress and Rencontres godmother Marilyne Canto. This year’s edition promises an exceptional tribute, which will continue the following day with the screening of Costa-Gavras’ series Le Siècle, followed by a lively debate questioning the lessons of the 20th century by journalist Edwy Plenel. Join us on Sunday, March 16 at 10 a.m. for this unforgettable encounter!
Les Rencontres Cinématographiques is also open to talent from the four corners of the globe. You’ll have the chance to discover touching and captivating films such as Aïcha, by Tunisian director Mehdi Barsaoui with actress Fatma Sfar, and Baby by Brazilian Marcelo Caetano. From Alireza Ghasemi’s Iranian film Au pays de nos frères, to Muriel Cravatte’s Belgian documentary Mothership, not forgetting Jours d’été by Moroccan director Faouzi Bensaïdi. Each film is an invitation to discover new cultures and take a fresh look at our times. The couple Marcia Romano and Benoît Sabatier will also present their offbeat film Fotogenico, a work that is as refreshing as it is surprising.
The event also features special screenings for schoolchildren and families, so that everyone can immerse themselves in the world of cinema. You can also look forward to conferences and debates on hot topics, not to mention off-site events for even more discoveries!
An exceptional cinematic journey not to be missed
During the 10-day festival, you’ll be immersed in a world where cinema rhymes with revolt and poetry. A not-to-be-missed event for Marseillais in search of new emotions, deep reflection and cinematic discoveries!
