What would Marseille be without its indestructible link with soccer? The city of Marseille is embarking on a major new sporting adventure. While the city of Milan – initially chosen to host the event – is no longer in a position to do so, Marseille wishes to submit its bid to host the prestigious Champions League final in 2027. We explain!
Marseille applies to host the Champions League final in 2027
Sébastien Jibrayel, the city of Marseille’s deputy sports director, announced on Tuesday that he would be submitting a bid for Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome to host the championship final.
The epicenter of Marseille soccer, the Orange Vélodrome stadium has already been the scene of some great sporting moments. Since its renovation for Euro 2016, it has been able to accommodate more than 67,000 spectators and now ranks among the most modern sports facilities in Europe: a major asset for Marseille’s bid. Its capacity, coupled with its unique and mythical atmosphere, could well seduce UEFA in its final choice.
A golden opportunity for Marseille
Can Marseille win this race? We hope so, but the competition promises to be tough. In addition to Milan, other major European cities are also bidding to host the final. All that remains is to convince UEFA of Marseille’s ability to organize a safe, smooth and memorable event!
For Marseille, the hope is high that this historic event will confirm its status as the soccer capital of France. To this day, Olympique de Marseille remains the only French club to have won the Champions League in 1993. The Champions League final will be played in Munich in 2025 and in Budapest in 2026.
We’ll keep you posted on the final decision!
