Art in a former stone quarry

The Carrières des Lumières has not always been the venue for digital projections. Located at the foot of the town of Les Baux-de-Provence, this limestone reserve became the Grands Fonds quarry in the 19th century, driven by industrial growth and strong demand for building materials. However, the arrival of new materials after the First World War led to its decline, resulting in its permanent closure in 1935. A place steeped in mystery and history, the site has inspired many artists, including Jean Cocteau , who was captivated by its unique beauty and filmed Le Testament d’Orphée there . Renamed ” Carrières des Lumières ” in 2012, it is now the digital art center we know today.
