With the return of sunny days, the allure of outdoor terraces becomes irresistible in Marseille. While there is no shortage of options in the Phocaean city, one spot nestled along the waterfront deserves a visit. Housed in a historic building, the Café de la Consigne offers a timeless escape, blending architectural heritage with breathtaking views of the open sea. A distillation of the Marseille art of living in a truly unique setting.
A café in a historic setting

It is no coincidence that the Café de la Consigne chose this setting for its opening in March 2026. The former health inspection station, whose original building dates back to 1719, is a precious testament to the city’s maritime past. Designed by Antoine Mazin, the King’s architect, it was built during the expansion of the arsenal before being duplicated identically in the 19th century.
Listed as a Historic Monument since 1949 and fully renovated in 2020, this discreet gem now hosts the association Marseille, Capitale de la Mer, with which the café now shares this space steeped in history.
A waterfront café with a terrace
It is therefore in this historic building in the Old Port, facing Fort Saint-Jean, that Café de la Consigne comes to life. Born from the teams at Saint Esprit and Les Deux Moulin, the project aims to offer a lively space where conviviality is the watchword. The 70-seat terrace opens onto the quays of the Old Port and offers a breathtaking view of Notre-Dame de la Garde. A setting that speaks for itself and lends all its charm to the place.
Sit down to enjoy a peaceful break while savoring the lapping of the water and the warmth of the sun. A breakfast menu in the morning, sharing plates of hummus, tapenade, or panisses throughout the rest of the day: the menu focuses on the essentials and complements this moment with simple elegance. In short, a must-visit spot for those seeking to combine visual delight with the good life.
