As winter draws to a close in Provence, certain landscapes are adorned with shades of white and pink. Long before the lavender and summer fields, it is the almond trees that herald the return of spring. Just 90 minutes from Marseille, the villageof Apt and its surroundings offer a sight as delicate as it is magical: almond trees in bloom. Combining a bucolic stroll, agricultural heritage, and the discovery of a charming Provençal village, this getaway to the Luberon is well worth the detour.
A stroll among the almond trees in bloom near the Moulin de Salignan

On the heights of Apt, a small promontory offers a typically Provençal landscape. Here you can see the Moulin de Salignan, an old mill whose sails have vanished over time but which still watches over the surrounding hills. From this vantage point, the view stretches across the Luberon hills, with the Mourre Nègre on one side and Mont Ventoux on the horizon.
Right next door lies a still-little-known spot: the almond tree conservation orchard. This unique garden is home to over a hundred trees representing some forty different varieties. By the end of winter, the trees are covered in delicate blossoms, transforming the orchard into a peaceful, fragrant setting. You can stroll through it at a leisurely pace, lulled by the song of birds and the buzzing of insects gathering nectar.
This orchard also plays an essential role in preserving biodiversity and local agricultural heritage, as almond trees have been cultivated in Provence for several centuries. It is, in fact, one of the first fruit trees to bloom, sometimes as early as the last days of winter.
Apt, an authentic town in the heart of the Luberon

After this nature break, head to the center of Apt, a charming little town located in the heart of the Luberon Regional Nature Park. Known for its quintessentially Provençal atmosphere, it charms visitors with its historical heritage and lively narrow streets.
On Saturday mornings, its market draws visitors and locals alike to discover local products in a friendly atmosphere. It’s the perfect opportunity to sample local specialties, particularly its famous candied fruits, which have made the town’s reputation far beyond Provence.
While strolling through the historic center, you’ll also discover lovely shaded squares, ancient fountains, and beautiful facades of mansions. Among the must-sees, Sainte-Anne Cathedral and the Clock Tower evoke the town’s thousand-year history, whose origins date back to Roman times.
When is the best time to see the almond trees in bloom?
