Majestically overlooking the Old Port, the former Hôtel-Dieu de Marseille embodies a fascinating chapter in Marseille’s history. Dating back to the Middle Ages, this monument has weathered nearly a millennium of transformations, weathered major epidemics, and embraced the major medical innovations of its time. Now transformed into a sumptuous five-star luxury hotel, the building boldly blends its glorious architectural heritage with refined contemporary design. From its monumental facade — designated a Historic Monument —to its suspended staircases and panoramic terrace, discover the incredible transformation of a heritage masterpiece where centuries of history intertwine.
From the Hôpital du Saint-Esprit to a historic monument: the transformation of a Marseille giant
The site’s history dates back to the 12th century, when the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit founded the first hospital to care for the sick, the needy, and abandoned children. In 1593, Charles de Cazaulx merged this institution withthe Hôpital Saint-Jacques de Galice to officially foundthe Hôtel-Dieu. Over the centuries, the building continued to expand to keep pace with Marseille’s growing population. Distinguishing itself from other French hospitals by its exclusively lay staff, the site became a major center for scientific innovation.

To modernize this colossal structure, massive construction projects spanned the 18th and 19th centuries. Construction of the main building began in 1753, and in 1785, it was enhanced with the addition of the two famous monumental staircases. Between 1860 and 1866, architect Félix Blanchet raised the height of the building and cleared the surrounding area before its official inauguration by Napoleon III. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1963 for its facades and galleries, the Hôtel-Dieu saw its last patients leave in 1993. The hospital closed its doors permanently in 2006, bringing to a close a medical chapter spanning nearly a millennium and ushering in a new era as a hotel.
The former Hôtel-Dieu: a bold blend of luxury and heritage
Purchased by the city and then entrusted to AXA Real Estate, the Hôtel-Dieu began its major transformation in 2010. In 2013, the property reopened under the InterContinental brand: a five-star luxury hotel that is a pioneer in sustainable development. Inside, Jean-Philippe Nuel has created a refined interior design that pays homage to the city of Marseille and harmonizes with the Mediterranean. The archaeological remains discovered on site—from the Roman mosaic floor dating to the 1st century B.C. to the pointed arches of the former kitchens—are now beautifully showcased inthe cultural space and the restaurant.

A tour of the hotel reveals a striking balance between restored historical details and contemporary comfort. Guests can admire antique solid-wood doors, majestic staircases paved with white marble, and a spa designed in the style of ancient Roman baths. One of the hotel’s greatest treasures remains its panoramic terrace, overlooking the masts of the Old Port, which offers a spectacular view of the Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica. By blending 2,600 years of history withmodern hotel elegance, the InterContinental stands out as an unmissable, luxurious destination steeped in heritage.
